CLERMONT, Ind.—This time, there was no controversial finish.

For the second NASCAR Nationwide Series race in a row, Carl Edwards went side-by-side for the lead on the final lap. But Saturday night at O'Reilly Raceway Park, Kyle Busch held Edwards off to win the Kroger 200 at the 0.686-mile track.

Last week at Gateway International Raceway, Edwards dumped Brad Keselowski coming to the checkered flag, triggering a multicar accident and forcing NASCAR to penalize both drivers.

This time, Edwards raced Busch cleanly, and Busch grabbed his 38th career Nationwide Series victory, second only to Mark Martin on the all-time win list. Martin has 48 wins in the series.

Edwards and some others on the lead lap pitted for fresh tires on Lap 162, with Edwards restarting 11th with 28 laps to go. Edwards sliced through the top 10 to get to second, and a caution came out with six laps to go.

On the green-white-checkered restart, Busch got the jump on Edwards into Turn 1, though Edwards tried to get to the inside lane on the white flag lap and on the final lap. But Busch was up to the task. He led four times for 144 laps.

Ron Hornaday, who won Friday night's Camping World Truck Series race here, ran in the top five for most of the race until he and the lapped car of J.C. Stout got together in Turn 2 on Lap 161.

"Lapper just turned left," Hornaday said after he drove his damaged car behind the wall.

Aric Almirola finished third, with polesitter Trevor Bayne fourth and Reed Sorenson fifth.

Hornaday Jr. Ends 22-race Winless Streak

Credit: John Harrelson/Getty Images for NASCAR
Ron Hornaday Jr. celebrates his fourth victory at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis after winning the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series AAA Insurance 200.

CLERMONT, Ind.—The back-to-basics approach seems to work for Ron Hornaday Jr. and the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team.

Hornaday Jr. snapped a 22-race winless streak in the truck series Friday night, winning the AAA Insurance 200 at O'Reilly Raceway Park.

Watched by team owner Kevin Harvick, Hornaday led 129 laps and beat runner-up Kyle Busch by 2.095 seconds for his first victory since Aug. 1 of last year at Nashville Superspeedway.

Hornaday credited crew chief Ernie Cope — who rejoined the truck team while maintaining his crew chief job with the KHI NASCAR Nationwide Series group — with helping turn things around.

"We couldn't do it without Ernie Cope and all these guys on this Chevrolet," Hornaday said. "They worked their guts out, changing the truck after last weekend. It's just a great day. Hopefully it keeps a little bit quiet. It took Ernie to come over here and settle everybody down. The guys were getting a little anxious. We know we've got a winning team. We just had to prove it to them."

What did Cope do for Hornaday?

"We just kind of went back to what we call our basic package," Cope said. "We've had people come in and try to do their own thing. I know everyone wants to make an identity for themselves, but it wasn't working. We had to make changes. We just went back to basics here with Ron and let him drive the truck, don't try to do nothing trick. We just went to basics and let him do his job. You're going to win a lot of races when you do that with Ron Hornaday."

Hornaday chipped in, too, trying to change his luck to get back to the winner's circle.

"I changed my tennis shoes, changed all my luck stuff," Hornaday said. "I just (went) back to my basic (of) come to the racetrack and try to kick butt, and it seems to be working."

The victory was Hornaday's fourth at ORP in 11 starts at the 0.686-mile short track. He led 67 laps in winning the race here in 2009 and has won three of the last four at the facility.

The key moment of the race came on Lap 153, when Hornaday squirted past Busch and polesitter Timothy Peters for the lead in Turns 3 and 4. Busch was trying to pass Peters on the high side but was blocked by Peters, opening the door for Hornaday.

"That's one the things you've got to remember about this place," Busch said. "You can dive-bomb the bottom really fast and pull a slide job on somebody, and he did it so well that I was still stuck behind the 17, so I couldn't even turn back underneath him and do it back to (Hornaday) in the next corner."

Said Hornaday: "Timothy was kind of backing up the corners, so once I got under Kyle, I kind of pinned him back there. We never touched or anything, but that's what you've got to do here at ORP."

Busch finished second after practicing his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Matt Crafton was third, with Johnny Sauter fourth and James Buescher fifth.

Austin Dillon was sixth, with Todd Bodine seventh, Brad Sweet eighth, David Starr ninth and Peters 10th.

Bodine's series points lead grew to 177 over Aric Almirola, who finished 31st after being involved in a Lap 96 accident with Narain Karthikeyan and Mario Gosselin.

NEWS & NOTES
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series News And Notes - Pocono

The anticipation of the NASCAR Camping World

Truck Series arriving at Pocono Raceway has been

building for over 10 months and for good reason.

The Pocono Mountains 125 will mark the final

track on the current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

schedule on which the NASCAR Camping World

Truck Series has not competed, and the shortest in

laps on an oval, with 50.

It will be a shootout of sorts on the secondlongest

track where the NASCAR Camping World

Truck Series competes.

Not only will the lap total be short, but so will

qualifying with the addition of multi-truck qualifying.

Kasey Kahne (No. 18 Toyota Tundra Dealers

Toyota), Elliott Sadler (No.2 Grand Touring

Vodka Chevrolet) and Denny Hamlin (No. 15 Billy

Ballew Motorsports Toyota) are entered to run the

event in addition to their normal duties in the Sprint Cup Series.

Kahne, who has not competed in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series since 2004, is attempting to

pull off a third victory in his third series start.

He has won every series race he has entered, scoring wins at Darlington Raceway and Homestead-Miami

Speedway.

And when it comes to Pocono, Hamlin owns the zip code – no matter what he is driving. He has four NASCAR

Sprint Cup Series wins at the “Tricky Triangle.”

But don’t count out NASCAR Camping World Truck Series veterans Todd Bodine (No. 30 Germain.com

Toyota) and Mike Skinner (No. 5 International Trucks/Monarch RV Toyota), both of whom own a pole at

the 2.5-mile track in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Of the two, Skinner leads the way with four top-10 finishes at Pocono. Bodine follows with two top 10s.

It would be easy to assume Saturday’s victory may go to a veteran NASCAR Sprint Cup competitor due to

their Pocono experience, but with nine top-five finishes and the largest points lead after 12 races in NASCAR

Camping World Truck Series history, Bodine might have another plan up his sleeve.

Multi-truck Qualifying On Deck For Pocono Event

Practice is always important to NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competitors, but this Friday’s final

practice session at Pocono Raceway is crucial.

The qualifying order for the Pocono Mountains 125 will be set by inverting the practice times from final

practice. Multi-truck qualifying will be used for the first time to determine the starting lineup on an oval.

“The distance and uniqueness of Pocono afforded us the opportunity to implement this style of qualifying

for this event,” said NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Director Wayne Auton. “SPEED is excited about

the format and we believe the fans, drivers and viewing audience will embrace it, too.”

Trucks will be released in approximately 25-second increments. Two laps of qualifying will be allowed with

the fastest lap counting. Once a truck comes onto pit road, its respective qualifying lap is complete.

No drafting is permitted. A drawing for qualifying order will be held in case inclement weather cancels the

session. The field would then be set according to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series rule book.

“I love going to a new race track for the first

time. I am like a kid in the candy store – full of

excitement. We have been working for over a

year to bring the NASCAR Camping World Truck

Series to the ‘Tricky Triangle.’

“Heading to a new track means – for the most

part – everyone is a rookie.

“And it is great to be racing back in Pennsylvania

– the Northeast fans are always so supportive

of the series.

“I remember the good ol’ days when we raced

in this area at Nazareth Speedway. Lots of great

memories there.

“I am also anticipating multi-truck qualifying at

Pocono this weekend. It will be the first time we

have done something like this on an oval. It will

be exciting for the fans in the stands and those at

home watching on SPEED.

“Just think– we will not know who wins the pole

till the last truck goes out for qualifying.

“Several NASCAR Sprint Cup regulars are

pulling double duty with us this weekend. Always

nice to have them jump back into a truck during

companion events.

“Kasey Kahne is going to drive for Kyle

Busch Motorsports and attempt to score his

third series win in his third start. He has won

every race he has entered so far, but he has not

competed in our series since 2004.

“Think he can do it?

“I wouldn’t count him out,

that’s for sure, but I think Pocono

King Denny Hamlin

(No. 15 Billy Ballew Motorsports)

might have something

to say about that.“

Wayne Auton, Series

Director

For most, the dreaded 50th birthday isn’t

cause for a celebration, but for Ron Hornaday Jr.

(No. 33 Ollie’s Bargain Outlet), it proved to be

worth going over the hill.

His victory last weekend at O’Reilly Raceway

Park was his 11th since turning 50 in 2008 and

his 50th NASCAR national-series wins.

He sits third on the list – behind Harry Gant

and Joe Ruttman – as drivers who have earned

the most wins since that milestone birthday.

The ORP victory broke a 22-race winless

streak for Hornaday – the second longest such

streak in his career.

Statistics prove when Hornaday gets on a roll,

he wins – sometimes two or three in a row.

So winning at age 50 does not look like it will

be a problem for the defending series champion.

He only needs three more victories to surpass

Ruttman and eight to take the lead over Gant.

And for a guy who has won no less than four

races in each of the last three seasons, this could

turn out to be a race of its own outside the championship

run.

The stakes for this October’s trophy at Martinsville

Speedway just went up a notch.

Track officials announced last week that NASCAR

Camping World Truck Series winners will

now be given the coveted grandfather’s clock, a

longtime tradition at Martinsville.

Previous race winners – 18 to be exact – were

sent home with a trophy, but not a grandfather

clock.

“When we started giving clocks back in the

early sixties, we gave them to Cup winners only

because that was the premier event,” said Martinsville

Speedway President W. Clay Campbell,

“but the truck series races here are always

so good, so exciting, we decided those guys

deserved a shot at the most unique trophy in

racing.”

Virginia native Timothy Peters (No. 17 Red

Horse Racing Toyota), who won his first series

race last October at Martinsville, is itching now

for another victory, thanks to the clock.

“This is a huge deal,” he said. “I wish it had

started last fall. I would have it sitting in my trophy

room right now.”

Kahne Looking For Third NCWTS Victory In His Third Series Start

Nashville Superspeedway is home to one of the most coveted trophies

on the 25-race circuit – the Gibson guitar designed by Sam

Bass.

And for the first time in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series history,

two drivers will take home the famed guitar in one season.

Kyle Busch (No. 18 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota) won his

first race as a team owner during the series’ first stop to Nashville in

April.

The second guitar is up for grabs next week in the Nashville 200.

Ron Hornaday Jr. made his way to Victory Lane last season, but

series veterans Todd Bodine and Mike Skinner are still looking to

conquer Nashville Superspeedway.

Kasey Kahne already holds the distinction of

being the only driver in NASCAR national-series

history to win each of

his first two races in

any series.

Kahne only has

two starts in the NASCAR

Camping World Truck Series, both were

victories.

Can he make it three-for-three?

There’s little reason to think he can’t. He has

more experience at Pocono than just about every

driver in Saturday’s field. Not only does he have

the Pocono know-how, he has success.

In the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Kahne has

finished in the top 10 in three of the last five

races – including a win in June of 2008. Over that

span, he has put up impressive numbers: an

average finish of 11.0, a Driver Rating of 113.3,

an Average Running Position of 8.5, 119 Fastest

Laps Run, 145 Laps Led and a Laps in the

Top 15 percentage of 83.3%.

Of course, there’s another double-duty driver

that will likely run up front with Kahne all race –

Denny Hamlin.

Hamlin has four victories at Pocono in the

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, including the last

two. Over those two events, Hamlin had an Average

Running Position of 2.8, a Driver Rating of

146.5, a Pass Differential (passes minus times

passed) of plus-43, 118 Fastest Laps Run and

179 Laps Led.

NASCAR Nationwide Series News And Notes - Iowa

Elephant In The Room: Busch Hasn’t Forgotten Last Year

The term “double-duty” was coined to describe drivers who run in multiple NASCAR series, usually on

the same weekend. Reigning series champion Kyle Busch (No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota) and two-time

series champion (and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings leader) Kevin Harvick (No. 33 Jimmy John’

Chevrolet) are in that category.

It also fits when tagging drivers who run fulltime in both NASCAR Sprint Cup and NASCAR Nationwide,

like the latter’s points leader, Brad Keselowski (No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge), Carl Edwards (No. 60 Fastenal

Ford), who’s second, and Paul Menard (No. 98 Mastercraft/Menards Ford), who’s sixth.

Saturday night at Iowa Speedway, “double-duty” takes on another meaning; as in a two-way rivalry.

The dispute between Keselowski and Edwards is well known. But after the finish at the inaugural series

race at Iowa last year, tack on a contentious Keselowski-Busch relationship heading into this one, too.

Busch and Keselowski traded the lead at various points after Lap 105 of last year’s 250-lap event. Following

a late-race caution, Busch, who was leading, opted for two tires. Keselowski stayed out, bulled his

way by Busch with eight to go, and went on to win.

It’s probably safe to assume Busch hasn’t forgotten.

With Busch coming off a win last week at O’Reilly Raceway Park, it should make for an exciting evening.

Busch has won eight of the 16 series races he’s entered this year, and is two wins shy of tying the mark

for most wins in a season. He already shares that record with two-time series champion Sam Ard, who set

the record in 1983. Busch tied the standard in 2008.

He’s also edging closer to Mark Martin’ all-time series record of 48. Busch has 38 wins in 189 career

starts. Martin has 231 NASCAR Nationwide Series starts.

There’s one other rivalry note between Busch and Keselowski. It comes in the form of the owner championship.

Although Busch isn’t defending his series title, he’s the main reason the No. 18 team is in the hunt

for its third owner title. Keselowski’s Penske Racing team is one point ahead of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing

team. Busch has been aided this year —when not running in the No. 18 —by Brad Coleman, who will

be his substitute driver this weekend. Parker Kligerman takes that role for Keselowski.

Elephant In The Room: Busch Hasn’ Forgotten Last Year

Saturday night’s event at Iowa Speedway marks the last of three consecutive stand-alone races for the

NASCAR Nationwide Series. Since June 5’s second visit to Nashville Superspeedway, the series will have

run six stand-alone races, including two groups of three consecutive races that weren't combination events

with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

There are nine stand-alone events on the 2010 schedule. Two remain after this weekend –Aug. 31 at

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal and a second visit to Gateway International Raceway on Oct. 23.

Stand-alone season has given series-only regulars and other young up-and-comers subbing for double

-duty drivers an opportunity to showcase their talent. Take Matt DiBenedetto. He’s the driver charged with

handling the bulk of stand-alone races in the No. 20 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. But even then, he’s still

shared a few stand-alones with Joey Logano, making every race for the 19-year-old (his birthday was July

27) carry that much more importance.

Entering Iowa, half of the standings’ top-10 drivers are series-only regulars, led by Justin Allgaier (No.

12 Verizon Wireless Dodge) in third. An average of 5.3 “regular guys” have finished in the top 10 in the

previous six stand-alone races this year, while three have captured Coors Light poles. Trevor Bayne (No.

99 Aaron’ Dream Machine Toyota) has won the last two poles at Gateway and ORP.

Allgaier Hopes To Turn The Tide At Iowa

Justin Allgaier’s 2010

season has been one of

ebbs and flows.

Fortunately for the

youngster, it looks like this portion could be one

of success. Considering the trends from this

season, it seems Allgaier, 24, is due for a few

good runs in a row.

Here’s the sequence:

Allgaier’s first five races were tremendous.

He earned top-five finishes in each, including his

first NASCAR national series win at Bristol Motor

Speedway. Over that five-race stretch, Allgaier

averaged a finish of 5.0, a Driver Rating of

104.1, an Average Running Position of 9.4 and

a Laps in the Top 15 percentage of 82.6%. He

averaged a robust 160 points per race in the first

five.

Then the dip came, and fears of a sophomore

slump surfaced. Allgaier had six consecutive

finishes outside the top 10. His numbers: an

average finish of 14.5, a Driver Rating of 92.9, an

Average Running Position of 11.2 and a Laps in

the Top 15 percentage of 75.8%. His points per

race average was 120.3 – a 40 point drop from

the first five.

Then there was a short uptick. After those

six subpar finishes, Allgaier ripped off two top

fives and three top 10s in three races. He averaged

a Driver Rating of 115.0, an Average Running

Position of 6.4 and a Laps in the Top 15

percentage of 92.1%. His points per race average

launched back to 157 per event.

But a disastrous race at Road America (he

finished 35th) gave way to a rough patch of five

races, three of which were finishes outside the

top 15. In that particular segment, Allgaier had an

average finish of 18.6, a Driver Rating of 82.4

and an Average Running Position of 15.2. He

averaged 110.4 points per race.

But the 2009 Raybestos Rookie of the Year

rebounded last week at O’Reilly Raceway Park,

finishing seventh with a Driver Rating of 104.6.

Now he heads to Iowa, where he ran extremely

well last year despite a finish outside the

top 10. In the inaugural NASCAR Nationwide

Series race there, Allgaier started second, led 35

laps, posted a Driver Rating of 116.4 and had an

Average Running Position of 3.9. Still, he finished

15th.

It was a case of horrible luck –a double

dose of it, actually. First, in the closing laps, Allgaier

got hit by Brendan Gaughan (No. 62

South Point Hotel & Casino Toyota) after pulling

out of his pit box and suffered some right

front damage. Then, on the ensuing restart with

15 to go, Allgaier, Steve Wallace (No. 66 5-Hour

Energy Toyota) and Erik Darnell wrecked on

the backstretch.

Hawkeye Heaven: Annett Races In His Backyard

Talk about circling a date on your calendar.

Michael Annett (No. 15 Northland Oil

Toyota) has worn his pen down doing just that.

Annett is native of Des Moines, Iowa, about

20 minutes west of Iowa Speedway. He’s currently

14th in the driver standings, and looking to

catch some second-half lighting in order to match

or better his 10th-place finish in the points last

year as a Raybestos Rookie. Annett was 11th at

his home track in this event one year ago.

“I’ve been looking forward to this race all

season,” he said. “I got an amazing feeling during

last year’s race when I circled the track and the

stands were packed with fans from my home

state. Having the support of all those fans makes

our sport what it is today, and I’m really excited to

see how well NASCAR is being embraced by the

fans at Iowa Speedway. I can’t wait (for) Saturday.”

Annett already holds a prestigious record at

Iowa as the driver with the most laps of competitive

racing there. Following a semi-pro hockey

career, Annett turned to racing and honed his

skills at Iowa Speedway in ARCA competition

and in the ASA Late Model Series Challenge

Division. He made his ARCA debut at Iowa in

2007, when he won the pole, led eight laps and

finished third.

"I take a lot of pride in my home track,” he

said. It’s one of the nicest facilities we visit, and a

fun track to compete on. Heading into race week

at Iowa, I’ll spend the whole week making appearances

in the area and catching up with those

who have been there for me since the start of my

racing career. My family, friends, fan base and

many of my sponsors are here in the Midwest, so

it’s a fun week leading into race day at Iowa

Speedway."

Appropriately, Annett also is the Nationwide

Insurance “Driver of The Week.”

The first-year initiative by series sponsor

Nationwide Insurance is a program designed to

increase driver awareness, with emphasis on

series-only regulars.

Annett will participate in a live web chat with

fans on Wednesday, July 28 at 12 p.m. ET on

NASCARnationwideseries.com. He also will be

ESPN2’s in-race reporter at Iowa.

The U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway is

the third of four “Dash 4 Cash” races, an incentive

program designed by series sponsor Nationwide

Insurance where full-time, part-time and

limited-schedule series-only drivers along with

fulltime double-duty drivers have the opportunity

to pocket an extra $50,000 with a win.

Otherwise, the pot —which would be

$25,000 heftier at $75,000 —rolls over to the

final “Dash 4 Cash” event, Nov. 6 at Texas Motor

Speedway.

Kevin Harvick, who at the time was a fulltime

driver in the series, won $25,000 in the first

“Dash 4 Cash” race of the 2010 season at Nashville

Superspeedway in April.

Joey Logano wasn’t eligible for the bonus

when he won at Kentucky Speedway on June 12,

the second “Dash 4 Cash” race. So the $25,000

bonus rolled over to its current $50,000 at Iowa.

Brad Keselowski won the bonus last year

at Iowa, which was $75,000. As one of the three

2010 fulltime double-duty drivers this year, he’s

eligible once again.

Since they both gave up their fulltime double

-duty status at various points this season, Harvick

and Kyle Busch aren’t eligible at Iowa. That

should make for an even more spirited race, with

the eligible drivers vying for the bonus and two

top contenders in Busch and Harvick doing what

they can to deny that opportunity.

“Dash 4 Cash” Bonus At $50,000 For Eligible Winner At Iowa

Brad

Hot Weather Favors Steve Wallace

The dog days of summer don’t seem to

bother Steve Wallace. On the contrary, he enjoys

his role as of the hottest drivers in the series.

Following his outside pole and second consecutive

top-10 finish last week at ORP, he

comes to Iowa riding streaks of eight straight top-

15 finishes. Both are the third-longest such

streaks in the series, behind Carl Edwards and

Brad Keselowski, respectively.

Last year, his 10th place finish at ORP was

his ninth top-10 result, matching his personal

best for top 10s in a single season (set in 2009).

Wallace, 22, is one of the few series drivers

who has visited Victory Lane at Iowa. At the inaugural

ARCA event there in 2006, he overtook

Juan Pablo Montoya for the pole position and

rode that momentum to win at the track designed

by his famous father, Rusty Wallace.

Wallace is seventh in the driver standings,

second among series-only regulars. He’s been

ranked among the top 10 in the points following

each of the last eight events. His Rusty Wallace

Racing teammate, Brendan Gaughan, is seventh

in the driver standings.

►Summer School For “Regular Guys”

Steve Wallace is just one of many seriesonly

regulars who have shown improvement over

the summer months.

In addition to his two consecutive poles,

Trevor Bayne has improved from 15th to ninth in

the driver standings after collecting two consecutive

top-five finishes.

Bayne and Wallace are two of five seriesonly

regulars ranked in the top 10 this week.

From the races at Kentucky in early June to

ORP last week, Bayne, 19, has the following stat

line: Three top-five qualifying positions, four top-

10 finishes, three top-five finishes, 74 laps led, an

average starting position of 9.5 and an average

finish of 13.1. Included in those numbers is his

career-best finish, third, at Gateway.

Following his 12th-place finish at ORP,

Colin Braun (No. 16 3M Ford) now owns three

top-10 and six top-12 finishes in his last seven

starts. Braun’s Roush Fenway Racing teammate,

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (No. 6 CitiFinancial

Ford) won his first career pole in the series at

Iowa last year.

Robert Richardson Jr. (No. 23 R3 Motorsports

Chevrolet) posted his career-best

finish of 15th at ORP. As a result, his R3 Motorsports

team moved up one position in owner

points to 26th, marking two consecutive weeks of

gains in the standings. Richardson will be making
