JON ELKINS JR
CAPTURES INDIANAPOLIS SPEEDROME® ALL-STAR 200
Indianapolis
Speedrome®
Indianapolis, Indiana
September 27, 2010
The Home of the World Figure 8® turned its focus to the Thirsty
Turtle Tavern Hornets for their premier event of the season, the
All-Star 200. The 4th annual long-distance classic is a showcase for
the racers in the four-cylinder machines from the oval and Figure 8
divisions in one big race. The evening’s agenda also called for the
Scooter’s Auto Sales
Stock Figure 8 cars presented by Peters Auto Service and
1-800-Radiator
& AC Roadrunners. The post regular season environment had fun and a
quest for victory feel in the air on a beautiful Saturday night at
the Indianapolis
Speedrome®.
The 4th Annual All-Star 200 for the Thirsty Turtle Tavern Hornets
had an event record number of cars on hand for this race which is
ten times longer than the normal class feature. The 40-plus car
field headed first to qualifications. The goal would be to set a
time inside the top 20 which earned those drivers a locked in spot
in the starting grid. Veteran Kyle Byrd was the fastest qualifier
with a lap of 15.324 seconds. Just .004 seconds separated James
Curry’s 20th best speed over Melanie Coil who would have to venture
into a semi-feature contest. Most of the field fell inside of 1
second from the #55 of Byrd.
Former Hornet Figure 8 champion Robby Mink Jr won the trophy dash
for the quickest 4 cars. The first semi-feature was won by reigning
Mini Indy 125 champion Sean Barry. He bested Coil and Josh Casse for
the victory. The second semi-feature saw Jeff Rapp pilot his truck
to victory lane. The veteran finished ahead of Chris Dietzel and
Eddie Small. The results of these events would determine how the
racers would be added on to the massive lineup for the All-Star 200.
The green flag
waved with the race going in the clockwise direction and Curry
taking the initial lead. The large grouping of cars made it tough to
be patient for the long race while still getting a strong early pace
going to avoid falling behind. James would soon see his teammate and
car owner Keith Graybill on his bumper. The race would see its first
red flag on lap 9 for Leonard Mullins and David Coil. Neither would
return. Curry did return to the lead, but Graybill stayed steady
until making his move to first on lap 15. Division career victory
leader Chad Sizemore rose to the runner-up spot after starting 19th.
Driving Robert Eversole’s Chase for the Cup championship car, he
snagged the top spot on circuit 24.
The red was out again on lap 31 for a tangle between Robert Amos Jr
and Don VanValkenburg III. When the green returned, it was Keith
going back to the front. He clicked off five quick orbits before
inaugural event winner Jess Holliday was next to top the field. He
was challenged a handful of circuits later by Mr. Byrd. Kyle quietly
worked from his 20th starting spot to make the pass for first on lap
47. He had a nice pace going until the red flag returned for the car
#94 driven by youngster Tylar Brown on lap 68. Holliday went back to
first soon after. There were several new players joining the mix for
victory during this stage.
Jess, piloting the 2010 feature wins leading car of Larry Hatfield,
had recently crowned Figure 8 champion Brad Brooks and Stock
rookie-of-the-year Nigel Peters ready to pounce. Brad led laps 87
and 88 before Nigel was first on the 89th circuit. Peters would pace
the pack until the traditional race halftime break on lap 100. The
teams received 5 minutes on the clock to freshen up the cars and
drivers for a run to the
checkered flag.
When the racers returned to the track, the contest would resume in
the classic left-hand-turn course configuration.
Brad Brooks returned to first place when the green flag was back in
the air. He set off with some blazing speed which started to put
many cars down laps over the next 50 orbits. Nigel was staying in
striking distance. Also joining this party was former division
champion Jon Elkins Jr in the defending race winning car owned by
Don Klein. The final red flag would wave on lap 150 to make a swap
in the running direction. Right-hand-turns would be the adventure on
the run to destiny. The trio turned lap after lap winding through
heavy traffic. This would come into play with the finish in sight.
Elkins got around Brooks with 8 to go and powered to the victory. It
was his first in the All-Star 200 race.
Peters slid to second late with Brooks having to settle for third
after leading 91 of the final 100 circuits. These three were the
only ones on the lead lap. Allen Hargraves continued his strong 2010
season finishing 4th just one lap behind. Cassidy Worden was an
impressive fifth 2 circuits off the pace. Rounding out the top ten
was Junior Lemasters, Robert Amos Jr, Melanie Coil, Brian Cooper,
and James Curry. There were 8 different leaders with 10 lead changes
in the very competitive event. Amos improved the most positions
starting 30th before coming home 7th and surviving an early
altercation.
The Scooter’s Auto Sales Stocks presented by Peters Auto Service
were on hand for an all Figure 8 program. Nigel Peters was best in
time trials
with a lap of 19.301 seconds. Crossover specialist Mike Burgess and
3-time Kenny’s 100 winner Larry Hahn captured preliminary heats.
Hahn would make it a perfect night adding the victory in the 25-lap
feature. He came home ahead of Peters and third place finisher
Speedy Teepe. In other action, it was Kevin Smith winning the main
event for the 1-800-Radiator & AC Roadrunners. Kevin added this
triumph to his season championship earned just last weekend. Gene
Dibbern returned to driving duties after several years away. He
drove his son Justin’s car to second place followed by rising
division star Billy Pittman.
